Joey LaPorta dropping absolute nukes of neurology knowledge!!! #Willow

Well, it’s official. I can no longer hang. Look at me sleeping with my mouth open like a dope. #Washed-up #Embarrassing.

Look how happy I was pre-falling asleep in my chair like an idiot.

Willow was cute, but so is this tiny little cat. To quote the vet “She’s not underweight, she’s just a petite lady”.

Tessa picking up a new hobby to help pay her room and board. Come on over so she can take your money. High rollers only. #nofreeloading

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Methods to mitigate implicit bias in patient care based on an article by Dr. Quinn Capers can be found here.

1) Common identity formation - during the patient interview, inquire about possible common group identities between you and the patient (home town, sports team, language proficiency, love of the arts, etc.)

2) Perspective-taking - before or during the patient encounter, pause to consider the stress the patient is under today and what their life will be like for months after this encounter

3) Consider the opposite - after an initial review of patient information and coming up with a disposition, pause and re-review the information, actively looking for evidence for the opposite conclusion, then make a final decision

4) Countersterotypical exemplars - focus on individuals you admire and respect who are in the same demographic as the patient

Shout Outs!

…to Verda Arshad for doing outstanding work on a busy neurology service from a grateful senior resident!

..to Ally Willauer, for an impressive diagnosis of rapidly progressing gangrenous cholecystitis that definitely saved a patients life, from an impressed attending!

..to Jonathan Huang, for driving his co-resident to Step 3 testing. ON BOTH DAYS. What a guy. People like this are why we all came here.

..to VA Team 2 (Jorgen, Ethan, Tom, and Anna) for being an absolute blast to work with on this chief’s first attending week! So impressed with your excellent patient care!

…to Mark Rudolph for being an amazing night VA senior. Truly inspiring work on such a tough night I will never forget. Learned alot from him and appreciative for the great team work.

..to George Ceballos for a glowing review and shoutout from all the staff at the VA. “Dr. Ceballos has been an amazing asset to our night tour. In all my time at the VA hospital, he has truly been one of the most approachable, understanding, and caring physicans to work with! Both staff and patients alike can't say enough good things about his bedside manner and how great of a team player he has been in helping to manage our veterans' care overnight. His frequent rounding and checking on both staff and patients is greatly appreciated. Thank you for all you do Dr. Ceballos! Your hard work does not go unnoticed.” If we could bottle George’s enthusiasm it would sell like hotcakes.

…to Emmy Mai for being accepted to present at CHEST conference! Huge accomplishment!!!!

..to Joey LaPorta for an amazing review of stroke, status epilepticus and other neuro emergencies. This guy can TEACH. And he has a cute pup too. If your patient has AMS, give this guy a call!
